If you take pride in your lawn it shows that you also take pride in your home. While taking a stroll thru my neighborhood I certainly take notice of how each lawn is maintained. If someone’s lawn has crabgrass or other weeds growing in it and in need of mowing it is an indication of what the inside of the house may look like. Lawns are a continual maintenance project thru out most of the year. You should check for diseases and weeds frequently.I have lived in the same house for over thirty years now and am constantly working on it. This blog is going to be devoted to my trials and tribulations that I have gone thru to have a beautiful lawn that I can enjoy looking at and also have a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. Although I have never really replaced my whole lawn all at one time, I am sure that I have actually replaced the half acre more than one time.I wish that I could have known all of the lawn care advice that I intend to impart in this blog when I first built my house. It would have saved a whole heck of a lot of time anguish over the years. I actually lost a third of lawn one year to grubs. What an experience that was. Especially since my neighbor, who does absolutely nothing to beautify his lawn, had very little grub damage. There are people that have a special penchant for lawns, and work related to lawn care is almost a hobby for them. Many homeowners take care of their own lawns, watering and mowing them at regular intervals .Tending lawns involves more work than one might think. For beginners, one should start with the appropriate kind of grass for the yard. Then you must water it, tidy it, fertilize and it.

As I dig deeper into my research of lawn care I keep seeing information about starting up or operating an existing lawn care business.

As a retired businessman, I see and exciting opportunity for anybody looking for employment or to find extra dollars to supplement their income or just plain wanting to be your own boss. Everything about this opportunity excites me and the start-up costs are quite reasonable.

I am also finding in my research that there is growing demand for lawn care service all around the country. Now would be a good time to sit down and create a business plan or a plan of action to get your new business started. A well written and thought out plan will be most useful should you need to borrow money for your venture.

You can start small if you so desire and buy more equipment as you grow. You could start with just cutting grass in the beginning and add additional services as you grow. The equipment that you would need to start out with would be a mower, blower, trimmer, broom, rake, edger and safety goggles and gloves. You have to be able to transport your equipment to the job site. You are going to need a trailer or van.

The next thing that you are going to need are customers. Getting your first lawn care customers will probably be your biggest challenge when you start your own business.Always display yourself and your equipment in a professional manner. First impressions are the most important as with anything in life. Once your business is established you won’t have to work nearly as hard to get new customers. The easiest and most inexpensive way to get customers is to call your circle of family and friends.Make good promotional materials to distribute to your target market. Business cards are one of the better marketing tools and are inexpensive.

Reach your potential customers directly using lawn care flyers and door hangers. Use online classified sites to advertise such as Craigslist and Backpage.com. List your services in an online lawn or garden care directory. People use these directories to find lawn mowing help in their area.

Approach realtors and property management companies directly with your promotional material. They are an great source of lawn care jobs.

Finally, let’s discuss the keys to your success in starting up a lawn business. Always do more than is expected of you. Going the extra mile always pays off. It means higher customer retention, referrals, and ultimately more money. Present every aspect of your business with the utmost professionalism. Your image and reputation are everything to your business. Do not do anything to hurt them. Last, have fun and enjoy your work. Take pride in the job you do and you will succeed beyond measure.

Fall Lawn Care

The best lawn care advice that I can give you right now would be that beginning in late August through early fall your lawn maintenance duties will be the most effective.

This is the best time for any major lawn rehabilitation. All of your efforts now will translate into a healthier lawn and mean less work for you during the next growing season.Fall is the best time of the year to fertilize. You may fertilize three or four times a year but fall should be your #1 application that will do the most good. Your fertilizer should have a weed killer in it as this is also the best time of the year to kill lawn weeds.

Fall is also a great time for aeration of your lawn. This would also be a good time to overseed.Adding humus or organic matter to your lawn is also a good idea right about now. By leaving a layer of mulched leaves to decompose can help in this department. Lawns are naturally acidic so adding lime to your lawn to keep the ph level between 6 and 7.2 would help to keep insects in check plus adding magnesium and calcium that will increase seed germination.

When your lawn has more than a half inch of thatch it is time to dethatch. While thatch provides nutrients as it decomposes, too much could cause your lawn to thin and host harmful disease organisms. It will also prevent the roots of your grass from receiving air, water, and other nutrients. As you can see there is much to do in the fall.

When these tasks are done it will mean that you have less mowing, less watering and less pest and weed control in the spring.I hope that this lawn care advice has been helpful to you but I did forget one thing that I know a lot of us would like to forget about and that is to service our lawn mowers.

Keeping your lawnmower well-maintained with sharp blades is important. It makes sense to get it serviced in the fall before you put it away for the winter. Make sure that it is clean and oiled before locking it up for the winter.

The Yard Butler D-6C Core Lawn Aerator is great for old lawns or lawns where a lot of activity takes place.
